U.S., a 67 year old male

As a competitive athlete, I work hard to keep my body healthy. While Dr. Macart was instrumental in resolving my medical issue (kidney stones), she has also supported me in maximizing my physical performance. Using all natural methods, I tonify before a race and get treatments to speed recover after a race. My trophy shelf speaks for itself.

Signed, The fastest 67-year-old man in the world.

L.M., 41 year old female

Having been diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder and offered corticosteroid therapy, I sought out Dr. Macart for natural solutions. My program involved significant diet and lifestyle changes along with supportive medicine. A year later, my lab work is normal, my other doctors are pleased with my recovery and I feel great. The hard work was worth it and I am happy to embrace the life choices that keep me healthy.

Signed, Reaching my potential

C.X., a 63 year old female

Frustrated with recurrent symptoms of colitis and no real answers from the medical system, I sought out another opinion.  In desperation and getting the name of Dr. Macart from a friend, we worked together to build an effective therapeutic diet and support regimen that SERIOUSLY changed my life.  Today, I live with greater vitality, a more balanced system, and I know where to go to complete my medical picture.  Her integrative approach lets me get the best o both worlds when it comes to my health.

Signed, Freedom

First Steps...

I’m inspired, let’s begin…

1.  Call Dr. Macart’s office Opti-Balance at 250.752.2711 and book a time to meet with her to begin sharing information about what’s going on for you.  No time like the present to start learning and healing – Let’s strike while the iron is hot!

2.  Download and print off an intake form.  This form streamlines the gathering of your medical history and provides a framework for Dr. Macart to understand your goals and priorities concerning your health.  Together, you can focus attentions where they’ll do the most good because your individual nature has been taken into account.

3.  Collect as much medical history as you have in your possession.  You may wish to consult with your other medical professionals and collect recent relevant data such as blood work and or medical imaging. If necessary, we may update or pursue fresh data pertinent to your case which can be discussed during the intake.

4.  Create an exhaustive list of medications and natural products that  you are using so Dr. Macart knows what is in the mix before adding to or subtracting from it.  Eventually, your regimen will be tailored to your needs.

Naturopathic Modalities

The ways naturopathic medicine may interact with you

Clinical Nutrition

13077_lores

Nutrition is fundamental to health.  Dietary analysis is an integral part of a comprehensive health plan.  Different health issues require different nutritional approaches.  Dr. Macart is highly trained in how to use food and nutritional supplements for therapeutic purposes.  For your benefit, our clinical nutrition spans the dinner table to the clinic, utilizing the best methods to improve your nutritional status.  Let healths pursuit be delicious too.

Botanical Medicine

bluebells

Plants have been the source of medicine for centuries.  Known for their synergy of effect, the complexity of herbal medicine also contributes to their ease of tolerance and minimal side effects.  Botanicals may be taken as teas, tinctures, extracts, dry substances and even spices.  Discover the ancient wisdom of plant based medicines on your healing journey.

Pharmacology

13548_lores

Biochemistry is a huge part of medicine and, in some cases, pharmaceuticals have an important role to play.  A well rounded naturopathic program may occasionally call on pharmaceuticals or it may work around a drug protocol already initiated.  Either way, you are encouraged to explore your options and decide for yourself which interventions suit you best. We value your “choice” in choosing your healthcare path.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

Mix-Pack-8-1121.jpg

Oriental medicine is a system of balancing excesses and deficiencies. Herbs work with acupuncture to stimulate the body’s circulating energy known as “Qi” (pronounced “chi”). In many cases the doctor may use electro-acupuncture to increase both effect and duration of treatment.

Physical Medicine

14076_lores

A variety of hands-on techniques may be used to alleviate pain and support biomechanics.  These include bodywork, craniosacral therapy, incline therapy, and hydrotherapy.  With the help of technology, energy in the form of light and sound can have rebalancing influence on the body.  Ask us about our low level laser therapy or our cranial stimulation. Because the science of physics plays an important role in medicine, we can use this to our advantage.

Homeopathic Medicine

Chamomile flower and homeopathic medication on blue surface

Homeopathic medicine is based on the law of similars- “like cures like”. Thousands of substances have been diluted and potentized to become a huge array of homeopathic preparations. A homeopathic intake gathers useful information so that the practitioner may match the patient’s “homeopathic picture” to a certain remedy.  This specialized form of medicine is gentle, is well tolerated and has a wide range of applications.  While homeopathy is only a couple of centuries old, it has a substantial place in the realm of healing substances.  Learn more about homeopathic medicines first hand.

Counselling

couplecounselling

A person’s health has physical, mental and emotional aspects. Lifestyle modifications and stress management are crucial to optimizing and preserving health. Largely solution oriented, we help patients find their way through difficult challenges.  You are not alone and you are more than capable.

Investigating the Human Condition

Range of Issues and Challenges

Naturopathic physicians are primary care practitioners, that is to say that they are often the first professional to consult for individuals and families who desire a less invasive and more wholistic approach to their health care. Naturopathic physicians treat patients with a wide range of acute and/or chronic conditions but rely on alternative tools and modalities, as well as pharmaceuticals, to resolve health issues. Even disease-free people may benefit from preventive medicine as it is infinitely easier to maintain health than repair it once it is damaged or broken. Naturopathic physicians deal with the full spectrum of health conditions that people encounter whether that may be chronic, acute, gender, or age specific.

Dr. Macart's Medicine 101

Wisdom pouring forth from Dr. Macart - Please use what you need and credit Dr. Macart's work

Dr. Tara Macart

Naturopathic Physician

Minds broadened thus far...

Welcome to Medicine 101.

I would like to start by introducing myself.  I am Dr. Tara Macart, naturopathic physician, and I run a busy family practice in Qualicum Beach. I consider myself very lucky to do what I love in such a wonderful place. I am also fortunate enough to work with my husband, Jonathan Macart, business manager and chelation therapist, who also loves his work.  Together, we bring good health into grasp at our naturopathic medical clinic, Opti-Balance. Now, we can touch people’s lives through this column, Medicine 101.

The mission statement, if you will, of Medicine 101 is “to inform and educate my readership to the ways that medicine can be demystified and to encourage the individual to become the champion of their own health.” Does anyone have a greater vested interest in your health than you? You may wonder why I chose this title. I want to discuss medicine at its core. Modern medicine and pharmacy both stem from a common origin.

For hundreds of years, medicine has evolved as a body of knowledge and much of it is still with value today. We are witness to a resurgence of people seeking natural solutions to health problems, not just a suppression of symptoms. People are seeking real medicine.  With the information age, we have a much more informed public, but it can get confusing. Our collective ideas of what medicine is and should be get clouded by so many sources and opinions. Medicine has become fragmented. Because there are so many offshoots of medicine, different specialties, I would like to illuminate the common thread. I intend to emphasize a common sense approach to health.

Let us get back to basics—what we all should know about how to achieve and maintain health. Aside from the fundamentals of medicine, another focus of this column will be on critical thinking. This does not mean that I want to tell you what to think. I wish to provoke the reader to question the status quo in order to move toward positive change, both personally and politically. As the public demands a more responsible medicine and finds its voice, power will lie with the people! I see this as a venue to disseminate knowledge and to spread a self-empowering message. In this column, you will find basic health information, discussion on current issues, and a philosophy to live by. It is possible that sometimes certain topics will leave the reader uncomfortable. Knowledge and self responsibility tends to do that. Gone are the days of blissful ignorance. Let us replace that discomfort with a motivation to improve things for oneself, and even better, for subsequent generations. “If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep walking.” – Buddhist proverb,  My Message: I am passionate about the development and sharing of knowledge and critical thinking. These writings are excerpts from a newspaper column called Medicine 101 that I wrote between the years of 2004 and 2014. I invite others to explore this information to challenge old ways of thinking and to expand their understanding of the topics. The material here is for information purposes and is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition nor replace a medical doctor. As we are all individuals and have peculiarities, please don’t take this as medical guidance, only medical information from my perspective.

Please call my office at 250.752.2711 to become a patient or refer to your own medical professional.
